Beware of the Plastic Bottle Scam: A New Car Theft Tactic

A simple plastic bottle could be a signal for car thieves. Learn how this tactic works and what to do if you spot one near your tire.

If you notice a plastic bottle lodged between your car tire and frame, don’t dismiss it as harmless. Instead, treat it as a potential warning and contact 911 immediately. This unusual discovery could indicate you’re the target of a clever and growing car theft scheme.

Plastic Bottle

Car thieves are constantly innovating, and their latest tactic is as simple as it is effective. Using a plastic bottle, these would-be carjackers are deploying a low-cost method that has raised alarm in many parts of the world.

This trick, which originated in Limpopo, South Africa, has quickly spread to other regions, including the United States. The scheme involves placing an empty water bottle as a signal to mark vehicles for theft.

The bottle is strategically positioned against a wheel, often the front passenger side, to avoid detection. When the driver starts the car and moves, the bottle’s crackling sound grabs their attention, prompting them to stop and investigate.

As the driver exits to inspect the noise, the thief seizes the opportunity. If the engine is running and the keys are left inside, the car is easily stolen. Even if the vehicle isn’t taken, the thief might grab valuables left inside, such as wallets or phones. Worse, this setup also puts the driver in a vulnerable position for confrontation.

To stay safe, always inspect your car before entering, especially the tires and surrounding area. Look for anything unusual, including a plastic bottle wedged near the frame. According to Michigan’s WCRZ radio station, such vigilance can prevent a potential theft.

If you find a plastic bottle near your tire, avoid removing it immediately. Instead, discreetly call 911 to report the situation. Provide your location, and vehicle details, and express your safety concerns. Acting cautiously and staying aware can help thwart this dangerous scheme.
