The Resident Has Netflix Viewers Bingeing All 6 Seasons

People are discovering The Resident, an addictive medical drama on Netflix, and judging by the reactions online, starting one episode can quickly turn into watching an entire season.

The series has six seasons, more than 100 episodes and plenty of storylines capable of making viewers laugh one minute and reach for the tissues the next. Although it originally premiered years ago, its arrival on Netflix introduced it to a completely new audience.

And some viewers have absolutely flown through it.

One fan described the experience perfectly, saying they went from loving the series to hating it and then loving it all over again. Despite the emotional roller coaster, they simply couldn’t stop watching.

Another viewer admitted they only discovered the show after it appeared on Netflix and ended up racing through every available season.

Others praised the constant tension. There always seems to be another emergency around the corner, another difficult decision to make or another character whose story suddenly takes an unexpected turn.

Then there are the emotional moments.

One viewer confessed that the series made them cry far more often than they would like to admit.

But the tears aren’t the only reason people have become so invested.

The show mixes medical emergencies with comedy, relationships and some uncomfortable questions about the healthcare system. Storylines touch on the cost of treatment, the way patients are cared for, hospital politics, ethical problems and even attempts to hide mistakes.

That combination helps the show feel like more than another hospital drama where every episode revolves around saving a patient at the last possible second.

It’s The Resident.

Set inside the fictional Chastain Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, the series follows a group of doctors navigating the early stages of their careers while discovering that medicine isn’t always as straightforward as they imagined.

They enter the hospital wanting to help people, but quickly learn that knowing how to treat a patient is only part of the job.

There are difficult bosses, complicated relationships, questionable decisions and a healthcare system that doesn’t always put the patient first.

At the center of the story are young physicians learning how to survive that environment. They are helped along by experienced doctors who understand that what happens inside a hospital can be far messier than anything taught in medical school.

The series also doesn’t shy away from showing doctors making mistakes.

Characters are forced to decide when to follow hospital rules and when doing the right thing might mean breaking them. Some decisions save lives. Others create consequences that follow the characters for much longer than a single episode.

That is a big part of what keeps viewers watching.

You might begin an episode because you want to know what happens to one patient, only to finish it with three new storylines you suddenly need answers to.

The cast helped turn those stories into something audiences became attached to.

The Resident stars Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, Manish Dayal, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Bruce Greenwood, among others.

Their characters don’t remain neatly inside the hospital either. As the seasons progress, viewers get pulled into their friendships, romances, losses and personal struggles.

By that point, the medical cases almost become only half the reason you’re watching.

The show originally premiered in 2018 and eventually ran for six seasons.

Altogether, fans were given 107 episodes before the series came to an end in 2023.

For longtime viewers, that ending was frustrating.

The cancellation meant saying goodbye to characters they had followed for years, and many weren’t ready to do that.

Then something unexpected happened.

The Resident arrived on Netflix in 2024.

Suddenly, people who had completely missed the series during its original television run were finding it for the first time. The show climbed into Netflix’s Top 10 TV Shows in the United States, bringing a fresh wave of attention to a drama that had already been canceled.

Its streaming success also gave longtime fans another reason to ask the question they had never really stopped asking.

Could there ever be a seventh season?

The show’s cancellation wasn’t necessarily as simple as audiences losing interest.

Executive producer Andrew Chapman previously explained to TV Insider that complicated business arrangements surrounding the series made contract negotiations difficult.

The studio behind the show was connected to ABC, while the series itself aired on Fox. According to Chapman, that split created difficult negotiations year after year.

Whatever happened behind the scenes, fans were left with the same result.

Six seasons, and no season seven.

Netflix has now complicated that ending in the best possible way.

New viewers keep discovering the show, finishing all 107 episodes and immediately wondering why there isn’t more.

One fan summed up that frustration by saying that even though searches online suggest season seven isn’t happening, the writers need to pick up their pens and continue the story.

They’re far from alone.

And interestingly, some of the people who actually made The Resident haven’t completely shut the door on returning either.

Co-creator Amy Holden Jones spoke about the possibility of revisiting the series after its renewed popularity.

She told TV Insider that many of the people involved would love to return, adding that a significant portion of the original cast could potentially come back.

That matters because revivals can sometimes struggle when the actors who made the original show successful have already moved on.

In the case of The Resident, however, there appears to be genuine enthusiasm for stepping back into that world.

Manish Dayal, who played Dr. Devon Pravesh, has also made it clear that he would be interested.

When TV Insider asked whether he could imagine the show returning, his answer was enthusiastic.

He said he would love the opportunity for everyone to reunite, whether that happened through a revival or some kind of spin-off.

Of course, enthusiasm doesn’t mean another season has officially been ordered.

For now, the future of The Resident remains uncertain.

Still, its second life on Netflix shows why streaming can be so unpredictable.

A television series can end, disappear from weekly conversation and suddenly find millions of potential new viewers when it lands on another platform.

For The Resident, that new audience appears to be just as emotionally invested as the original one.

The show currently holds a 75 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and a 7.8 out of 10 rating on IMDb, based on tens of thousands of user ratings.

But numbers don’t really explain why people keep recommending it.

The reactions do.

People talk about crying over characters they didn’t expect to care about. They complain about decisions made in one episode and then immediately start the next. They get angry, attached, relieved and occasionally heartbroken.

And with 107 episodes available, there is enough material to keep a serious binge going for quite a while.

So if you’ve been endlessly scrolling through Netflix without actually choosing anything, The Resident might solve that problem.

Just don’t be surprised if “one episode before bed” turns into several.

And maybe keep some tissues nearby.
