Musk’s legal team asserts that OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, valued in the billions, violates an agreement to make significant AI breakthroughs freely accessible to the public.

This legal action marks an escalation in the ongoing disagreement between Musk and OpenAI, as Musk has established his own AI company, xAI. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, states in the lawsuit that he contributed $44 million to the organization, motivated by assurances, including written promises, that it would maintain its nonprofit status.

However, Musk severed ties with OpenAI’s board in 2018 due to disagreements with Altman over the research direction. Subsequently, OpenAI established a for-profit division, in which Microsoft made a substantial investment.

In response, Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, emphasized that although the companies are significant partners, Microsoft does not exert control over OpenAI.
