Man Who Used Melanotan II for Years Shares Stark Warning

DADADEL

A man who says he has used Melanotan II for nearly two decades is warning anyone thinking about trying it.

While many people still rely on fake tan products, others have turned to Melanotan II, an unlicensed synthetic peptide promoted online as a faster way to achieve darker skin.

Unlike self-tanning lotions or sprays, Melanotan II has never been approved for cosmetic tanning by regulators such as the FDA or the UK’s MHRA. Despite this, it continues to be sold online as injectable products and nasal sprays, often without any guarantee of what the products actually contain.

What is Melanotan II?

Melanotan II is a synthetic peptide originally developed for research into skin pigmentation and UV damage. It works by mimicking a natural hormone that stimulates melanin production, allowing the skin to darken, especially after exposure to ultraviolet light.

Although often nicknamed the “Barbie drug” or “vacation peptide,” health experts continue to warn against using it because it remains unregulated and has not undergone the safety testing required for approved medicines.

One of the best-known users online is an anonymous Reddit poster known as n3glv, who claims to have injected Melanotan II for around 17 years. He has shared photos documenting his increasingly darker skin tone, drawing both curiosity and criticism.

Some users praised the results, while others described the transformation as extreme. The Reddit user defended his appearance, saying he simply wanted to show what long-term use could achieve and admitted it was “not for everyone.”

Despite continuing to use Melanotan II, he repeatedly warns beginners not to assume it provides immediate protection from the sun.

“Biggest issue I have seen is people thinking Melanotan is instant UV protection and jumping into UV already. Don’t make that mistake,” he wrote.

According to him, he always follows a loading phase of about two weeks before spending time in direct sunlight because the peptide only encourages melanin production. It does not prevent sunburn or UV damage.

He also described several side effects, including reduced appetite and an unusual sensation of feeling extremely good while stretching about 90 minutes after each injection.

Doctors continue to advise against it.

Medical professionals strongly discourage the use of Melanotan II because of the potential health risks.

According to the NHS, reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and loss of appetite. The drug has also been linked to the darkening of existing moles and freckles, making skin monitoring more difficult.

Because Melanotan II products are sold through unregulated sources, experts warn there is no guarantee they are manufactured safely or contain the ingredients listed on the label. More serious reported risks include kidney infections, kidney failure, and a potentially increased risk of skin cancer.

Dr. Ross Perry previously told Glamour there is no such thing as a “safe” melanin injection, explaining that these products have not been properly tested or regulated and should be avoided.

Dr. Donald Grant, Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, echoed those concerns, saying that unlike approved medicines, users often have no way of knowing exactly what they are putting into their bodies.
