Ryan’s portrayal of Seven of Nine, a former Borg drone reclaiming her humanity, added depth and intrigue to the series. Her performance resonated with viewers, leading to a significant boost in the show’s popularity. Yet, this newfound attention wasn’t universally welcomed.

Kate Mulgrew, who portrayed Captain Kathryn Janeway, had been the central figure of the series since its inception. The sudden shift in focus towards Seven of Nine led to reported friction between Mulgrew and Ryan. Mulgrew, committed to portraying a strong female captain without reliance on sexualization, was reportedly unhappy with the attention Ryan’s character received. This professional tension created a challenging atmosphere on set.

Adding to the complexity, Ryan’s form-fitting costume as Seven of Nine became a topic of discussion. The attire, designed to emphasize the character’s reclaimed humanity, was physically demanding for Ryan. Reports indicate that the tightness of the costume led to discomfort and even caused her to faint on set. This aspect of her role highlighted the lengths actors sometimes go to bring their characters to life.

Despite these challenges, Ryan’s dedication to her role never wavered. She continued to deliver compelling performances, contributing significantly to the series’ success. Over time, both Ryan and Mulgrew have acknowledged the difficulties they faced, offering insights into the complexities of working relationships in a high-pressure environment.

The introduction of Seven of Nine undeniably revitalized Star Trek: Voyager, bringing fresh storylines and character development. While behind-the-scenes tensions presented challenges, they also underscored the passion and commitment of the cast and crew in delivering a memorable and impactful series.
