In a recent interview, President-elect Donald Trump stated he would “most likely“ grant TikTok a 90-day extension to finalize a deal that would prevent the popular video-sharing app from being banned in the United States.
This development follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a law requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell its U.S. operations by January 19 or face a ban due to national security concerns.
Trump emphasized the importance of carefully evaluating the situation, stating, “The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation.”
Without an extension, TikTok plans to “go dark” on Sunday, affecting its 170 million American users. The law permits the president to grant a 90-day extension if significant progress toward a sale is evident. TikTok’s CEO, Shou Chew, is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday, signaling ongoing negotiations.
The outcome of these discussions will determine TikTok’s future in the U.S. market.
