13-Year-Old Suffers Severe Neck Burns After Using Her Phone While It Was Charging

I think most parents would agree that the instinct to protect our children becomes priorities one through five the moment they enter our lives.

The thought of our little ones falling ill or getting hurt is almost unbearable, which is why we go above and beyond to keep them safe. It’s not something we consciously plan—it’s a natural instinct that kicks in the very second we first see our child.

Sadly, the world doesn’t always cooperate, and even with the strictest precautions, accidents can still happen.

Every parent dreads the moment something occurs that’s completely beyond their ability to prevent, especially when it’s an unexpected accident no one could have predicted.

Jackie Fedro knows that fear all too well. Her daughter’s terrifying experience may have unfolded in 2016, but it remains a story worth sharing today.

As reported by BuzzFeed, Jackie decided that 2016 was the year her daughter Gabbie—who was 13 at the time—would finally get her own cellphone. That Christmas, Gabbie received an LG d500.

“One of the reasons we finally gave in and bought her a cell phone is so we can keep in touch with her more with her crazy practice schedule,” Jackie explained to BuzzFeed.

But what happened next was a nightmare no one could have anticipated. Gabbie was in her room using her phone when Jackie suddenly heard a piercing scream.

“She came running downstairs after it [happened] grabbing her neck,” Jackie recalled. “She was in so much pain she was screaming hysterically.”

“It’s the worst feeling in the world as a mother to watch your child scream in pain and have no idea how to help her. It took her a good five minutes before she was even able to tell us what had happened.”

According to Gabbie, she had been using her phone while it was connected to its charger. The 13-year-old was electrocuted—the current traveled up the charging cord, through the phone, and into her metal necklace, leaving her with a burn across her neck.

Jackie told BuzzFeed: “She suffered painful second-degree burns and now will have a scar all the way around her neck.”

Reflecting on the frightening ordeal, Jackie encouraged other parents to be aware of potential cellphone dangers that often go unnoticed.

“With so many kids using phones now days, parents need to be warned about the harm that they can cause,” Jackie said.

How frightening is that? Had you ever heard of anything like this happening before? I certainly hadn’t.
