According to CBS News, Senate Majority Leader John Thune privately informed Trump that Hegseth is likely to have the votes needed for confirmation.
Despite allegations of financial mismanagement and inappropriate behavior during his time with two veterans advocacy groups, Trump, 78, has strongly defended his nominee.
However, former senior employees, including a trustee from Concerned Veterans for America, have refuted claims that Hegseth was forced out due to misconduct, calling the accusations from an anonymous whistleblower baseless.
Hegseth, a veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, has received praise from fellow soldiers. Sgt. Maj. Eric Geressy, who served with him in Iraq in 2005, said, “He lives and breathes the military. Pete is highly intelligent, articulate, and a critical thinker. He’ll learn from the experts and make informed decisions.”
However, Hegseth’s nomination remains under scrutiny. This follows allegations of sexual misconduct by an anonymous woman. She claims he assaulted her at a California hotel in 2017. Hegseth and his legal team maintain the encounter was consensual, and prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges after an investigation.
Hegseth has expressed his willingness to address all allegations in upcoming meetings with senators. A confirmation vote is expected in the Senate as early as next week.
