My Mom Chose Dance Lessons Over Babysitting—It Felt Like a Betrayal

I’m beyond frustrated. My mom has always watched my kids—that’s just what she does.

My wife and I work full-time and rely on her, especially for the younger kids. Now she’s just tossing that responsibility aside so she can “enjoy life?”

What about our life?

Where am I supposed to find the money for a babysitter?

She’s retired—she has nothing else to do—so why does she think she can just quit being a grandmother whenever she feels like it? She raised me, and now it’s her job to help me raise my kids. That’s how family works.

I don’t understand how she can act this way.

Mom’s Response

Hi everyone, Mom here. I wasn’t planning to respond, but here we are.

I love my family, and I adore my grandkids. But let’s be clear—I am not a full-time, unpaid babysitter.

I spent decades raising my own children, and now that I finally have time to enjoy life, I refuse to spend my golden years stuck at home changing diapers and wiping snack crumbs.

I’ve given my son everything—love, support, and yes, years of free babysitting. But I’m 71 years old. My knees ache, my patience isn’t what it used to be, and quite frankly, I’d rather push through a waltz than sit through Paw Patrol.

I’m not abandoning my family. I’m just choosing to live a little while I still can. And believe it or not, dancing and brunch aren’t reckless acts of rebellion—they’re just me finally having some fun.

I’ll always be here when it truly matters, but if my son thinks I owe him free childcare for life, maybe he’s the one who needs a lesson—in gratitude.
