A nine-year-old girl, identified as Luna, sustained permanent brain injuries after being raped and violently assaulted in Skellefteå, Sweden, in 2021. The perpetrator was then-15-year-old Abushi Shamse Kamal.
According to case files, the teenager had previously been implicated in several sexual-assault incidents in 2019 and 2021. He was granted permanent residency in Sweden one week before the assault on Luna.
Investigators report that Kamal assaulted the child and dragged her into a wooded area, where he attempted to strangle her using a shoelace. She was later found unconscious, with extremely weak breathing. Medical teams treating her stated that she had been close to death upon arrival at the hospital.
Doctors confirmed that the lack of oxygen caused significant and irreversible brain damage. Luna can no longer speak and has limited control over the movement of her arms.
She now requires medication for epilepsy, and her movements are spastic and involuntary. She has lost the ability to use language to communicate. Doctors have informed her family that Luna’s brain damage is permanent.
