Why Escalators Have Brushes on Their Sides

Many people may have used the side brushes of escalators to clean their shoes, but their real purpose is much more crucial. Escalator brushes act as safety features, preventing shoes and clothing from getting caught between the moving steps and the sides.

These brushes also serve as a psychological reminder to stay away from the edges. When people feel the brushes on their legs, they tend to move inward, reducing the risk of getting caught in the machinery. A TikTok account called “Untold Facts” explained how standing too close to the sides increases the chance of clothes or bags getting stuck in the escalator.

Interestingly, skirt deflectors—another name for these brushes—only became mandatory with the A2 amendment in 2004. Since then, they’ve helped ease the fears of many users.

For safer escalator rides, the North Carolina Department of Labor provides tips such as always picking up your feet when boarding or exiting, standing in the center of the step, holding the handrail, and being mindful of loose clothing or shoelaces. Avoiding distractions and maintaining balance is particularly important for senior citizens and children.

Escalators, while useful, come with risks, and these brushes help prevent many common mishaps.
