This Region in Italy Will Pay You More Than $32,000 to Relocate

In 2022, the region of Tuscany launched a financial incentive program aimed at encouraging new residents to relocate.

Italy is one of the world’s top tourist destinations, renowned for its exceptional food, stunning landscapes, ideal climate, and warm, welcoming people. Rich in history, art, and culture, Italy offers countless reasons to visit—but imagine waking up there every day. Since then, nearly 120 rural towns have introduced similar incentives.

Italy’s Population Crisis

Reddit

Rural towns and villages in Italy are experiencing a population crisis as younger generations migrate to larger cities for better job prospects. As a result, these areas have seen significant population declines, with many homes left abandoned. In response, regional officials have introduced initiatives like “Residency in the Mountains 2024,” offering new residents 30,000 euros (about $32,500) to help rejuvenate these communities.

A Few Drawbacks

Reddit

While this seems like a great deal, there are some considerations. Grants can range from 10,000 euros (around $11,000) to the maximum of 30,000 euros, and to qualify, the chosen town must have fewer than 5,000 residents. Additionally, the grant can only cover up to 50% of the total cost of purchasing or renovating a home.

Eligibility Requirements

Not everyone is eligible for these grants. Applicants must either be Italian citizens or citizens of another European country. Additionally, they need a residence permit valid for at least ten years and must reside in a town rather than a “mountain community.” Those who qualify can apply online through the Tuscany Region website, with applications due by 1 PM CET on July 27, 2024.

Relocation Options in Italy

Nearly 120 towns in Tuscany have adopted this incentive program. Some of the towns participating include:

•Mussomeli

•Zungoli

•Sambuca

•Cinquefrondi

•Pistoia

Living Costs

Though the financial incentives can help with renovations, there are additional costs to consider. For instance, residents of Zungoli must provide a $2,248 security deposit, while those moving to Sambuca must invest €15,000 (about $16,000) and pay a security deposit, which is refundable upon completing the renovation.

Affordable Italian Towns

Many of these Italian towns feature charming medieval homes in need of restoration. The region also includes homes for sale in Aspromonte National Park. In Pistoia, for example, a 1,200 sq ft home averages about $163,000, which is much lower compared to similar homes in the U.S., where prices are nearly double.

Exploring Italy

While relocating to Italy might sound like a dream, it’s a significant decision. If you’re considering it, visiting first is a good idea to get a feel for the area. Here are some must-do activities while you’re there:

•Wine tasting (Tuscany is famous for its vineyards)

•Visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa

•Taking a cooking class (known for its tomatoes and pasta)

•Relaxing in the hot springs

•Exploring historic cities like Florence, Siena, and Elba

•Enjoying the beaches

•Driving along the scenic coastline

•Discovering rural towns and villages with residency incentives

Italy’s Unique Offerings

Tuscany, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, world-class wines, and culinary excellence. Italy’s warm and welcoming spirit is evident in its people, who are known for their generosity and hospitality. Though facing challenges, particularly in rural areas, Italy remains a land rich in culture, passion, and creativity. This relocation initiative offers an opportunity for new beginnings in one of the most beautiful regions in the world.
