Baggage Handler Explains Why Tying a Ribbon on Your Luggage Is a Bad Idea

If you’ve ever anxiously scanned the baggage carousel at the airport, you know the frustration of trying to spot your suitcase among hundreds of similar-looking ones.

Many travelers have adopted the trick of tying a ribbon to their luggage to make it stand out. One airport worker warns that these personal markers could lead to unexpected problems.

Read on to learn why you might want to skip the ribbon and rethink packing certain items—like marzipan!

Avoid Ribbons and Personal Identifiers

To prevent other passengers from accidentally taking your luggage—or having it endlessly circle the carousel—many travelers use bright ribbons or other markers to make their bags easily identifiable. However, Dublin Airport baggage handler John explains that this tactic can actually cause delays.

“Ribbons people tie onto their suitcases can interfere with automated scanning in the baggage hall,” John told RSVP Live. “If the bag doesn’t scan properly, it may need manual processing, increasing the risk it won’t make your flight.”

For smoother travel, John advises removing old travel stickers and avoiding ribbons. “Stickers can confuse the scanning system,” he added, recommending a clean exterior for your luggage to ensure quick processing.

Think Twice Before Packing Marzipan

Interestingly, packing marzipan—a sweet almond treat—could also create issues. “Marzipan has a similar density to certain explosives, so your bag may be flagged, and you could be called back for a search,” John explained.

Additional Tips for Safe Handling

Before sending your luggage down the conveyor belt, make sure it’s positioned with the wheels facing up to avoid potential damage.

Stand Out with Bold Colors

While classic black or navy luggage is popular for its versatility, choosing a distinctive color can also make your suitcase easier to spot without causing scanning issues. According to Travel & Leisure, vibrant colors or unique patterns are a good alternative for making your bag recognizable.

If you prefer to keep your existing luggage, consider using fabric paint or stickers for added identification—without the risk of obstructing scanning systems.

These insider tips from Dublin Airport should help travelers avoid unnecessary delays and mishaps.
