The issue dates back to a 2021 audit of the estate’s federal tax filings. According to reports, the IRS argued that several assets had been significantly undervalued and claimed the estate owed roughly $700 million in additional taxes and penalties.
While the estate successfully challenged parts of those claims, not every disagreement has been settled. One of the biggest remaining issues involves the valuation of Jackson’s music catalog, Mijac, which is connected to Sony Music and represents a major portion of the estate’s overall value.
Because the final value of the estate remains unresolved, executors John Branca and John McClain say they cannot accurately determine how much money should be distributed to beneficiaries.
The situation is even more complicated because federal estate rules require that 20 percent of the estate’s assessed value be allocated to charitable causes before the remaining assets can be distributed to trusts benefiting family members.
Until those calculations are finalized, the executors argue that releasing inheritance payments could create serious financial and legal complications down the road.
As a result, requests to distribute inheritance funds have reportedly been denied for now. Despite being named beneficiaries nearly two decades ago, Michael Jackson’s children remain unable to receive their inheritance outright while the legal process continues.
Today, Prince, Paris, and Bigi are adults, yet the fate of the fortune left behind by their father remains tied up in court proceedings. Until the estate’s valuation disputes are fully settled, inheritance payments will likely remain on hold.
