In a recent development, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has come under scrutiny after reportedly retracting a plan to display tariff costs on products sold through Amazon’s Haul platform.
The initial plan aimed to inform consumers about the impact of Trump’s newly imposed tariffs—145% on Chinese imports and 10% on goods from other countries—by displaying these costs alongside product prices. However, after the President’s intervention, Amazon stated that the idea was never officially approved and would not be implemented.
The reversal has sparked criticism from various quarters. Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned whether Bezos received any promises or favors from Trump in exchange for halting the transparency initiative. She emphasized that displaying tariff costs could have provided consumers with insights into the true impact of the administration’s trade policies.
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel also weighed in, mocking Bezos for backing down, saying he “folded faster than an Amazon Basics umbrella.”
Despite the controversy, President Trump later praised Bezos for his swift action, stating, “Jeff Bezos was very nice. He was terrific. He solved the problem very quickly and he did the right thing. He’s a good guy.”
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Big Tech and government policy decisions, raising questions about corporate transparency and political influence.
