Joe Biden, 82, has received a devastating medical diagnosis: an aggressive form of prostate cancer. The former president’s office confirmed on May 18 that the disease has already spread to his bones.
A statement released by Biden’s team revealed:
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”
The statement added that although the cancer is aggressive, it appears to be hormone-sensitive, meaning treatment options remain available and potentially effective.
Health Concerns and Election Impact
Biden’s health has been a recurring concern throughout his presidency and especially during his short-lived 2024 campaign. After a lackluster debate performance against Trump and mounting pressure over his cognitive state, Biden shocked the nation by dropping out of the race just three months before the election, handing over the reins to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump Breaks His Silence
In a surprising and uncharacteristically warm message, Donald Trump addressed Biden’s health news via Truth Social:
“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
Messages of Support Pour In
Kamala Harris also issued a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), standing by her former running mate:
“Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time,” she wrote.
“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
A Long Battle with Cancer
This isn’t Biden’s first encounter with the disease. While serving as president in 2023, he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. He had previously received treatment for skin cancer, and tragically lost his son Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015 — an event that shaped his lifelong dedication to cancer awareness and research.
