The tragic loss of 10-year-old Autumn Bushman has left her family and community in mourning. Her parents, Mark and Summer Bushman, are now sharing the subtle changes they observed in their daughter before her untimely death, hoping to raise awareness about the warning signs of suicide in children.
Autumn was known for her vibrant energy and joyful spirit. “She was the youngest and probably the wildest,” her mother, Summer, recalled. “She was a ball full of energy… doing cartwheels inside of my house at all times.” However, in the weeks leading up to her death, Autumn’s demeanor changed noticeably.
Her parents noticed she began sleeping more, smiling less, and choosing darker clothing. These behavioral shifts, though subtle, were significant departures from her usual lively personality.
The Bushmans also reported that Autumn faced persistent bullying at school despite their efforts to address the issue with school officials. Summer explained that Autumn often stood up for other children who were being bullied, which unfortunately made her a target as well. Mark added that the bullying extended beyond school, facilitated by access to tablets and phones, making it a constant presence in Autumn’s life.
In response to Autumn’s death, the school stated they are conducting a thorough review of the events leading up to the tragedy. They emphasized their commitment to taking all reports of bullying seriously.
The community has rallied around the Bushman family, expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Autumn. Family friend Cher Nelson Johnson posted a heartfelt tribute, urging others to speak to their children about bullying and to check in on their loved ones.
Autumn’s family has invited the public to attend her visitation and funeral service, aiming to honor her memory and raise awareness about the devastating effects of bullying.
