Haribo has launched an investigation after reports surfaced that one of its popular gummy products was contaminated with cannabis, leaving several people ill in the Netherlands. In response, the company has issued a nationwide recall in the country.
According to the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), individuals who consumed the Haribo Happy Cola F!ZZ gummies — including several members of the same family — experienced symptoms like dizziness. Lab tests confirmed the presence of cannabis in the samples. “Do not consume these candies,” the NVWA warned in a public alert.
So far, only one specific batch sold in the Netherlands is believed to be affected. No products distributed in the U.S. or other countries have been linked to the incident, Haribo stated. Authorities say at least three packs tested positive for cannabis.
As a safety measure, Haribo is recalling its entire stock of Happy Cola F!ZZ gummies in the Netherlands, specifically those with a best-before date of January 2026. Consumers returning affected products will receive a full refund.
“The safety of our consumers is our top priority,” Haribo said in a statement. “We are taking this situation extremely seriously and are cooperating fully with local authorities.”
It remains unclear how the contamination occurred or how many people may have been affected. Officials have confirmed that no other Haribo products are believed to be compromised.
