He grew up in a scary cult, but today he’s one of Hollywood’s hottest and richest actors

Today, he is celebrated as one of cinema’s most gripping performers, renowned for an uncanny ability to vanish into roles that both disturb and captivate his audience.

However, Joaquin Phoenix’s path to stardom began in a world far removed from the glitz of Hollywood. Born into a family that shunned mainstream society, his early years were spent traveling through South America in extreme poverty and countercultural instability.

Few could have guessed that a child from such origins would become a global icon. While many stars have faced difficult upbringings, some, like Phoenix, were raised in cults—defined as groups led by charismatic figures who demand total control over their followers. For example, Glenn Close spent fifteen years of her youth in the Moral Re-Armament group.

Phoenix’s experience began even earlier. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to John Lee and Arlyn Bottom, he was the third of five siblings. His parents had joined The Children of God, a religious sect, and spent years living a nomadic existence across South America. In this environment, the children were tasked with distributing church literature and collecting money on street corners.

The family’s disillusionment peaked in 1978 when the cult’s leader, David Berg, sent a letter advocating for “Flirty Fishing”—using sexual encounters to recruit new members. It was later revealed that the group was under investigation by Interpol and Berg faced murder allegations. Reflecting on this time, Phoenix told Playboy in 2014:

“I think my parents thought they’d found a community that shared their ideals. Cults rarely advertise themselves as such. It’s usually someone saying, ‘We’re like-minded people. This is a community,’ but I think the moment my parents realized there was something more to it, they got out.”

The family fled to Florida, arriving nearly penniless. To signify their fresh start, they adopted the surname Phoenix. Despite the hardships, all five children possessed immense talent. They eventually moved to Los Angeles in a dilapidated station wagon, a journey so lean they had to give away their dog. As Joaquin told The Gazette in 2001:

“We couldn’t afford an extra mouth to feed.”

Success came quickly in California. Their mother, Arlyn, secured a job at NBC, which opened doors for the children. By age eight, Joaquin landed his first role, a moment he described to The Guardian as a transformative physical experience:

“For some kids, it’s the first time they crack a ball or score a goal. For me, it was this. I knew that I loved it—the physical sensation; how powerful it was. That’s the feeling I’ve been chasing ever since.”

For years, Joaquin worked in the shadow of his brother, River, who had become a massive star. But tragedy struck in 1993 when River died of an overdose outside the Viper Room. Joaquin was the one who placed the harrowing 911 call as his brother lay dying.

In the years following, Joaquin emerged as a powerhouse actor, winning acclaim for Walk the Line, Joker, and Napoleon. After a period of grieving in Costa Rica, he returned for To Die For (1995). His role in Gladiator (2000) was a turning point, earning him an Oscar nomination and making history, as he and River remain the only brothers to both be nominated for acting Academy Awards.

Though Joaquin is often private about River, he spoke about his brother’s influence on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast:

“My brother was quite a force and was definitely, like, I don’t know if it was mythical or Shakespearean, or I don’t know, maybe it’s because he died or something. Maybe it’s because he was the first son and he was incredible.”

“He was such a force within our family. He was kind of like the guiding light in some ways. He was the one who acted first. We used to sing on the streets and he played guitar and kind of like oversaw everybody.”

Phoenix is also a dedicated vegan and animal rights activist, a conviction born when he was three years old. While on a ship leaving Venezuela, he witnessed the violent death of fish caught by fishermen. He told Vanity Fair that the sight left a permanent mark, leading his entire family to adopt veganism shortly after.

In his personal life, Phoenix has found stability with actress Rooney Mara. The couple, who met in 2012 and began dating in 2016, have two children: a son named River and a daughter named Sparrow. In 2024, Phoenix referred to Mara as his “wife.” Mara spoke about their domestic life on the LaunchLeft podcast:

”It feels like a creative household, we’re constantly talking about creative things. It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t work for the first three and a half years we were together. Basically, since we’ve been together, I only worked one or two times and one was really small and short.”

When not on set, Phoenix leads a grounded life focused on meditation, documentaries, and karate, in which he holds a black belt. From the chaos of his youth to the tragedy of his brother’s death, Joaquin Phoenix has channeled every facet of his life into his art, proving that true talent is built on the courage to face both the darkness and the light.
