A shocking incident has shaken public opinion in Turkey after security camera footage surfaced showing a nurse physically abusing a newborn baby just five days old. According to investigators, the assault is believed to have caused the infant severe physical and neurological injuries, leaving her with permanent health consequences.
The incident occurred at a hospital in Kahramanmaraş. The nurse, identified as Hazel Dırık B., is currently facing legal proceedings and risks up to three years in prison on charges of intentional bodily harm. In the security footage, she can be seen striking the baby on the head and forcefully squeezing her leg while attempting to draw blood. Shortly afterward, the infant reportedly lost movement in one of her legs.
The family’s lawyer stated that the footage shows an episode lasting approximately 14 minutes, during which the nurse repeatedly abused the newborn. According to him, the case cannot be considered a medical accident but rather a serious and deliberate act of violence.
For years, the baby’s family believed her health issues were congenital. The truth came to light only three years later, when the parents received an official notification through the state’s electronic system informing them that criminal proceedings had been initiated against the nurse.
Following the revelation, the hospital announced that the nurse had been dismissed from her position and that disciplinary procedures had been launched. Meanwhile, the judicial process against her continues in the relevant court in Kahramanmaraş.
The child’s family is demanding the maximum possible sentence for those responsible, while the case has sparked serious concerns about patient safety and oversight within healthcare institutions.
