Music has a profound ability to touch our souls, evoking emotions that transcend daily experiences. It can make us laugh, cry, feel brave, or become reflective. A well-chosen melody can serve as the perfect remedy for stress or anxiety, offering solace to troubled minds.
Lindon Beckford, a patient transporter at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, embodies this therapeutic power of music. Singing since childhood, Lindon uses his voice to bring comfort to himself and those around him, regardless of the setting.
For over 30 years, Lindon has been a comforting presence for patients during their hospital journeys. Initially, singing was a personal comfort for him, but he soon realized its positive impact on patients. He recalls, “I was always singing at work… It was more for a comforting thing… So I did that just to comfort myself, but all of a sudden I get to realize people was listening to me.”
Recognizing the soothing effect of his singing, Lindon made it an integral part of his patient care routine. He tailors his songs to each patient’s situation, asking himself, “Is the patient in pain? What song can I sing to relieve them?” Patients often express gratitude, telling him, “You know, you make this trip from here to there so much easier because of your singing.”
One memorable experience involved a patient harmonizing with him en route to the catheterization lab. Lindon recalls, “I remember the first time a patient journeyed with me… she started doing harmonies for what I was singing… it was so amazing.”
Lindon’s genuine care and musical talent provide a soothing presence for patients who may feel anxious or scared. His voice reassures them that everything will be okay, offering priceless comfort during vulnerable times.
