Jo Ann Ussery did more than dream; she turned an old Boeing 727 into her residence. After her husband’s sudden passing left her in need of a new home, Ussery, with the suggestion from her in-law Bob, saw potential in an aircraft.
The plane, bought for only $2,000, became a project that showcased her creativity and determination. Placing it strategically on her property, Ussery transformed it into a bright, airy, and comfortable living space. The plane’s 76 windows provided ample natural light, while modifications like improved insulation and new flooring made it homely.
With a budget under $30,000, Ussery created a unique abode featuring three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and even a laundry facility. The cockpit became a luxurious master bathroom with a soaking tub offering stunning views. Her innovative use of space and resources turned the plane into a functional and aesthetically pleasing home.
From 1995 to 1999, Ussery and her children lived in their unique home, enjoying its comforts before it was eventually turned into a public museum. Though the plane was accidentally damaged during a move, Ussery’s story continues to inspire those who dare to dream and transform unconventional spaces into extraordinary homes.
