A childhood marked by abandonment
Few people could ever describe Keanu Reeves as a failure. After navigating numerous hardships throughout his life, the star of The Matrix has become a globally recognized name and is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s genuinely kind personalities.
Yet beneath his calm and humble public image lies a complicated past filled with struggles many never experience.
Reeves was born on September 2, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. His mother worked as an English performer and costume designer, while his father was a geologist from Hawaii. When Reeves was only three years old, his father walked out on the family, and his parents separated shortly afterward.
Raised primarily by his mother, Reeves moved constantly throughout his childhood. The family first relocated to Sydney, then to New York City, before eventually settling in Toronto, where he spent most of his youth.

The final time Reeves saw his father was at the age of 13 during a visit to the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
As a child, Reeves was diagnosed with dyslexia.
“Because I had trouble reading, I wasn’t a good student,” he said.
During his teenage years he attended four different high schools. Reflecting on that period in a 2008 interview with the Daily Mail, Reeves admitted school life was far from easy.
“I wasn’t exactly the most well-oiled machine in school,” he reflected.
“I went to four different high schools in five years,” Reeves said. “I was OK academically, good at English and creative writing. I was on the chess team.”
Despite academic challenges, his talent for acting quickly stood out. His abilities eventually earned him a spot at Etobicoke School of the Arts, a performing arts institution.
Still, he struggled to feel like he belonged.
“It was a very small school and I guess I didn’t fit in,” he told the Daily Mail.
“I had conflicts and run-ins with the staff. The principal and I didn’t see eye to eye. I was one of those ‘Why?’ kids – I asked too many questions about everything. I couldn’t stop even if it got me into trouble.
“I wanted my autonomy, and if you wanted to impose something on me, then you and I would have a problem.”
Eventually his rebellious streak caught up with him, and at just 16 years old he was expelled from school.
“It’s a terrible letter to receive, saying you can’t come back to school next year. Getting asked to leave was very upsetting,” Reeves said.
Ironically, that moment pushed him toward the career that would define his life.
“I started taking acting courses at night.”
The turning point
“It just seemed the thing to do. Most of it was out of respect for acting. I worked at some Stanislavsky stuff and I was playing around with sense memory. I started crashing auditions and then I got some jobs and joined the community theater. Then I got an agent.”
By the time he reached his late teens, Reeves had moved to Los Angeles and began accepting whatever acting jobs he could find. His breakthrough arrived in 1989 with the comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, which quickly made him a recognizable star.
However, Reeves was determined not to remain just a comedic figure in Hollywood.
During the 1990s he proved his dramatic range in films such as My Own Private Idaho, appeared alongside Al Pacino in The Devil’s Advocate, and cemented his status as an action star with Speed.

While his career flourished, his personal life was filled with sorrow. In 1999, his girlfriend Jennifer Syme was pregnant with their daughter, but the baby was stillborn. Only two years later, Syme tragically died in a car accident.
Years earlier, Reeves had already lost his closest friend, actor River Phoenix, who died from a drug overdose in 1993.
For many, such tragedies would be impossible to bear. Reeves, however, carried his grief quietly and continued forward.
