Alaska’s Mount Spurr, standing at 11,070 feet and located approximately 80 miles northwest of Anchorage, is exhibiting signs of an impending eruption. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has reported over 3,400 earthquakes beneath the volcano since April 2024, indicating significant volcanic unrest.

Recent observations have detected elevated levels of volcanic gases, including sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, along with reactivated gas vents at the Crater Peak vent. These signs suggest that new magma has intruded beneath the volcano, increasing the likelihood of an eruption in the coming weeks or months.

Historically, Mount Spurr’s Crater Peak vent erupted in 1953 and three times in 1992, producing ash clouds that affected areas hundreds of miles away. Experts anticipate that a similar explosive eruption could occur, potentially impacting air travel and depositing ash on communities in southcentral Alaska, including Anchorage.

In response to the increased volcanic activity, residents near Mount Spurr are taking precautionary measures. Preparations include stocking up on face masks, protective goggles, and other supplies to mitigate health risks associated with volcanic ash, which can cause respiratory issues and irritate the eyes, nose, and throat.

The AVO continues to monitor Mount Spurr closely, utilizing seismic sensors, satellite imagery, and other tools to detect further signs of unrest. Authorities advise residents to stay informed through official channels and be prepared for potential evacuation orders or other emergency measures should the situation escalate.
