New Study Uncovers the Precise Effects of Cannabis on the Brain

While marijuana use has long been a topic of debate in the U.S., its acceptance has grown. 24 states have legalized it for recreational use.

Additionally, medical marijuana is now permitted in 39 states. Leading many to perceive cannabis as relatively harmless. However, concerns remain about its lesser-known negative effects.

A report published in November delves into cannabis’s impact on brain function. Particularly its potential to reduce brain connectivity.

Researchers from McGill University discovered that young adults already at risk for psychosis. They experience even greater reductions in brain connectivity when using cannabis.

The study further found that synaptic density—which refers to the neural connections essential for brain communication—is lower in individuals at risk of psychosis compared to those without the condition.
