Reazjhana Williams arrived at Denver Health Medical Center in June 2021, anticipating a natural birth. However, complications arose when doctors couldn’t detect her baby’s heartbeat. This alarming development led to an immediate emergency C-section.
During the procedure, Reazjhana’s daughter, Kyanni, was delivered with a significant laceration across her left cheek. The medical team explained that Kyanni’s face was close to the placenta wall, which may have contributed to the injury.
Kyanni was promptly attended to by a plastic surgeon who administered 13 stitches to close the wound. The depth and severity of the cut were distressing for the family. Reazjhana expressed her confusion and concern, stating, “I’ve never heard of anybody having to deal with their baby’s face looking like this after a C-section.”
Denver Health acknowledged the incident, stating that while such injuries are known complications in emergency C-sections, they are rare. The hospital emphasized its commitment to patient safety and well-being.
In the aftermath, the Williams family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover medical expenses and explore legal options. The community responded with support, aiding the family during this challenging time.
Medical professionals note that while fetal lacerations during C-sections can occur, they are uncommon. Dr. Jacque Moritz, a New York City OB-GYN, remarked on the rarity of such deep cuts, emphasizing the importance of surgical precision during these procedures.
