The expedition was focused on examining a fissure in the seamounts along Hawaii’s Liliʻuokalani Ridge. Using a remotely operated vehicle, the crew aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilus uncovered the peculiar formation—and were just as stunned as the viewers who later watched their footage.
One crew member joked, “It’s the road to Atlantis,” while another exclaimed, “The Yellow Brick Road?” The awe in their voices was matched by those who watched the discovery on YouTube, with one crew member remarking, “This is bizarre. Are you kidding me? This is crazy!”
While the internet buzzed with speculation about the strange rock pattern, the researchers later provided a scientific explanation for the phenomenon.
In the YouTube video, the team identified the “road” as an example of ancient volcanic activity. The video’s description clarified:
“At the summit of Nootka Seamount, the team spotted a ‘dried lake bed’ formation, now identified as a fractured flow of hyaloclastite rock—a volcanic rock formed during high-energy eruptions where fragments of rock settle on the seabed.”
It might not lead to Oz or Atlantis, but discovering something so extraordinary beneath the ocean’s depths is remarkable nonetheless.
