Mathieu Vigier Latour, a 24-year-old business student from France, traveled to Istanbul for an affordable beard transplant.
He paid €1,300 (£1,082) — a fraction of the cost in France. Mathieu hoped to enhance his confidence through the procedure.
However, his journey quickly turned tragic. The operation was carried out by an unqualified estate agent posing as a surgeon.
Mathieu ended up with severe physical and emotional scars.
A Botched Transplant with Devastating Results
The procedure involved extracting 4,000 grafts from the back of Mathieu’s head. They were implantated on his face.
However, 1,000 grafts were lost during the surgery, resulting in a patchy, uneven beard.
Mathieu’s father, Jacques, described it as resembling “a hedgehog.”
The misplaced grafts grew at unnatural angles, causing burns, severe discomfort, and insomnia.
The Psychological Toll
The physical disfigurement was only the beginning.
Mathieu discovered that parts of his scalp were permanently damaged.
Young man was in deep despair. His father revealed that Mathieu developed post-traumatic shock and severe body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
“He felt trapped in a vicious cycle and couldn’t see a way out,” Jacques said.
Just three months after the failed surgery, Mathieu took his own life in his student accommodation in Paris.
