3. Is there anything you would do differently after 80+ years of marriage?

“Not a single thing. There’s no secret—just do what’s needed for each other and your family.”

Zelmyra: “Mine was just around the corner! Keep the faith—when you meet them, you’ll know.”

“Respect, support, and communicate with each other. Be faithful, honest, and true. Love each other with all your heart.”

Zelmyra: “A hard worker and a good provider. The 1920s were tough, but Herbert always wanted the best for us. I married a good man!”

7. What’s your best Valentine’s Day memory?

Zelmyra: “Herbert surprised me by cooking dinner. He’s a very good cook! Seeing the look on my face made his day.”

8. How did you grow as individuals without growing apart?

“Like planting seeds and harvesting crops, we celebrated our accomplishments together. We are individuals, but stronger as a team.”

9. What’s your fondest memory from your 85-year marriage?

“Our legacy: 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.”

10. Does communication get easier over time?

“Yes. With the children grown, we enjoy quiet moments together, whether on the porch or in our rocking chairs.”

11. How did you cope with being physically separated?

Herbert: “When Zelmyra was hospitalized with our fifth child, it was the hardest time of my life. Her mother helped me, or I would have lost my mind.”

12. What’s the most important reminder after a tough day in marriage?

“Marriage is not a contest. You’re on the same team, so work together to win.”

13. Is fighting ever important?

“Never physically. It’s okay to disagree, but fight for what truly matters. Learn to bend, not break.”

14. What’s the one thing that binds you above all else?

“Our faith in God. Marriage is a commitment to the Lord. We pray with and for each other every day.”

A Love That Endured the Ages

Zelmyra and Herbert’s marriage is nothing short of inspiring. Even after 87 years together, they remained as in love as the day they said their vows.
