Tourist submarine sinks in the Red Sea, at least 6 dead

The submarine, named Sindbad, had been preparing to take visitors on an underwater excursion. They were taken to view coral reefs when the disaster struck.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the vessel was stationed near the marina of a well-known hotel in Hurghada when it began to sink. Around 44 passengers of various nationalities were on board at the time.

Emergency response teams were placed on high alert. A total of 21 ambulances, along with security and rescue forces, were dispatched to the scene to assist in the rescue operation.

Authorities have successfully rescued 29 passengers so far. Of the nine injured, four are reported to be in critical condition.

The Sindbad submarine has operated tourist trips in the Hurghada area for years. The company owns two of the world’s 14 real recreational submarines. It offers visitors the chance to descend 25 meters (82 feet) below sea level to explore 500 meters of coral reef.

According to its website, each submarine accommodates 44 passengers and features large round viewing windows for an immersive underwater experience. The company promotes the attraction as suitable for all ages.

It also provides transportation from hotels to the terminal.

Ensuring onboard safety measures such as oxygen masks and life vests.

Journeys on the Sindbad typically begin with check-in at 11 AM local time, followed by a boat transfer to the submarine, which departs around 12:35 PM. Reports of the sinking surfaced just before midday.
