One fateful day, they visited a small lake where they could zipline over the water. Excited for the thrill, Aimee took her turn—but in an instant, everything changed. The zipline cable suddenly snapped, sending her plummeting toward a cliff. The accident resulted in a severe injury, ultimately costing her a leg.
But the tragedy didn’t stop thereWhile receiving treatment at the hospital, doctors discovered that Aimee’s wound had been infected with Aeromonas hydrophila, a dangerous bacteria that led to necrotizing fasciitis, also known as a flesh-eating disease. Her life was on the line.
After undergoing 11 surgeries and enduring an intense rehabilitation process, Aimee survived—but at the cost of both her hands and legs.
Despite the unimaginable hardship, Aimee refused to let her circumstances define her. She gradually adapted to her new reality, and just four years after the accident, a powerful photo of her on the beach went viral, inspiring thousands.

Today, in 2023, Aimee Copeland is a passionate advocate for amputee and disability rights. Through public speaking and social media, she continues to inspire countless people. In addition to her advocacy, she is pursuing a PhD in psychology at the University of West Georgia.
