A fatal shooting involving federal immigration agents has shocked Minneapolis and reignited painful memories of the 2020 killing of George Floyd. The victim, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, was killed Wednesday morning near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, just blocks from where Floyd died in police custody.

Witnesses told local station WCCO that at around 9:30 a.m., residents blew whistles to warn neighbors that ICE agents were in the area. According to those at the scene, a Honda Pilot was boxed in by several federal officers, and one agent attempted to open the driver’s side door.

Moments later, the SUV appeared to reverse and then move forward, at which point three shots were fired. Witnesses allege that Good was shot in the face. The vehicle then rolled a short distance before striking a parked car.

Video recorded at the scene shows a woman identifying herself as Good’s spouse screaming for help, crying, “That’s my wife,” and repeatedly stating that the couple has a six-year-old child. She can be heard desperately pleading for medical assistance as Good lay wounded inside the vehicle.

Witnesses said Good was shot after failing to exit the vehicle when instructed by federal agents.

Good’s identity was later confirmed by her mother, Donna Ganger, who spoke with the Minnesota Star Tribune. Some early reports suggested that Good and her wife had been acting as legal observers during anti-ICE activity, but Ganger firmly denied that claim, saying her daughter was not involved in any protest actions.

“She was probably terrified,” Ganger said. “Renee was one of the kindest, most compassionate people I’ve ever known. She was an amazing human being.”

The killing has sparked outrage across the city, with community members drawing parallels to past incidents of police violence and demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
