His son, is known in the wrestling world as El Hijo de Rey Misterio. He shared the heartbreaking news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Friday, December 20.
“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning… I will keep you informed. Thank you,” he wrote. Originally shared in Spanish, the post did not reveal the cause of death.
Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, one of Mexico’s premier wrestling promotions, also confirmed the news. Also honoring Misterio Sr.’s immense contributions to the sport.

“We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest,” the organization stated.
Born Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr. earned widespread acclaim throughout his storied career.
Performing in promotions such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, World Wrestling Association (WWA), and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.
His international fame reached new heights in 1990. At that time he represented Mexico at World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade pay-per-view as part of the Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup alongside fellow icon Konnan.
Over the years, Misterio Sr. captured numerous titles
Including the Revolution Tag Team Championship (alongside his son), the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.
Beyond his accomplishments in the ring, Misterio Sr. was a revered trainer who helped shape the careers of many wrestling legends. He played a pivotal role in mentoring stars like his nephew, WWE icon Rey Mysterio, as well as lucha legends Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666. Misterio Sr.’s gym, founded in 1987, became a training ground for some of the sport’s brightest talents.

In 1995, Misterio Sr. teamed up with his nephew to win the WWA Tag Team Championship, marking a milestone in their shared family legacy. His nephew, Rey Mysterio, has since carried the family name across global promotions like WCW, ECW, and WWE, where he continues to thrive as one of the sport’s most celebrated figures.
Rey Misterio Sr.’s passing comes just weeks after the death of Robert Gutierrez, the father of Rey Mysterio, at the age of 76.
Despite officially retiring in 2009, Misterio Sr. made a triumphant return for a final match in 2023, demonstrating his enduring passion for wrestling. He was inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006, solidifying his legacy as a true icon of the sport.
