New York — A young man from California has received a “second chance at life” after undergoing one of the most advanced face transplant procedures ever performed, restoring both appearance and function following devastating injuries.

Cameron Underwood, 26, of Yuba City, lost the majority of his lower jaw, nose, teeth and other facial structures in a 2016 self-inflicted gunshot incident that left him unable to eat, speak, or smile normally. Conventional reconstructive attempts were unable to restore the extent of what he had lost, severely limiting his quality of life.

In January 2018, a team of more than 100 surgeons and medical specialists at NYU Langone Health in New York City performed a 25-hour face transplant, led by Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez, a pioneer in facial reconstruction surgery. The procedure replaced much of Underwood’s damaged face with donor tissue, including his upper and lower jawbones, all 32 teeth, palate, nose, cheeks and lower eyelids, using state-of-the-art surgical planning and technology.

The transplant not only transformed Underwood’s appearance, but also restored essential functions such as eating, speaking and expression — abilities he had lost after his injury. His recovery progressed faster than anticipated; just 11 weeks after surgery, he was able to return home to California, ahead of schedule, and continues monthly follow-ups in New York.

Underwood and his surgical team described the operation as one of the most technologically advanced face transplants to date, involving three-dimensional surgical planning and innovative techniques to ensure precise alignment of bone and soft tissue.

At a press event, Underwood expressed deep gratitude to his anonymous donor and the donor’s family, saying their decision gave him back what he had lost and allowed him to pursue everyday life again. The extensive surgery has helped him regain independence, confidence, and the ability to return to activities he enjoys.

Medical experts say Underwood’s case highlights major advancements in facial transplantation and reconstructive surgery, offering hope to others who suffer severe craniofacial injuries.
