While fierce winds that fueled the flames and triggered chaotic evacuations have eased slightly, forecasters warn that the high risk of fire weather will persist through Friday.
Crews continue battling fires across the region, including major blazes in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, both of which remained active Thursday evening.
Progress on the Palisades Fire
The Palisades Fire, which ignited Tuesday and has devastated the coastal community of Pacific Palisades, reached 6% containment by Thursday evening.
“Thank you to our brave firefighters working tirelessly to combat the blaze fueled by hurricane-force winds,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a social media post.
Schools Closed Amid Fires
All Los Angeles Unified schools and offices will remain closed Friday due to the ongoing fires, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced.
The district has suffered severe damage, losing two elementary schools and sustaining significant damage to a high school. Carvalho also stated that efforts are underway to assist employees who have lost their homes.
Additional Resources Deployed for Kenneth Fire
Gov. Newsom announced Thursday night that 900 additional firefighters have been dispatched to combat the rapidly spreading Kenneth Fire near West Hills and Calabasas. The fire has grown dramatically, scorching more than a square mile (2.6 square kilometers) within hours.
Destruction Across the Region
According to Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, the Palisades Fire has destroyed or damaged over 5,300 structures, while the Eaton Fire has claimed more than 5,000 structures. Officials caution that these figures may increase as mapping and assessments continue.
