Doctor Warns of Mesotherapy’s Risky Side, Causing Reptile-Like Skin

Mesotherapy, a cosmetic procedure dating back to 1952, is experiencing a resurgence. Originally developed to alleviate pain, it’s now marketed as a quick fix for under-eye bags, wrinkles, and stubborn fat. However, medical professionals are raising alarms about its safety.

What Is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy

This technique involves injecting a blend of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts into the skin. The goal is to rejuvenate and tighten the skin while removing excess fat. Despite its non-surgical nature, the procedure can leave temporary raised bumps, giving the skin a honeycomb or reptile-like appearance.

Platforms like TikTok have amplified its popularity, with influencers showcasing “instant” results. DIY kits, available online for as little as $45, have made the procedure accessible to many. However, experts caution against self-administration due to potential risks.

Unlike FDA-approved treatments, mesotherapy formulas lack standardization. Each provider may use a unique blend, sometimes incorporating prescription drugs or unverified substances. This lack of regulation increases the risk of adverse reactions.

Dr. Viktoryia Kazlouskaya, a New York-based dermatologist, warns that it can lead to severe complications, especially when performed by untrained individuals or at home. Potential side effects include prolonged bruising, allergic reactions, skin necrosis, and even permanent eye damage.

While the allure of quick cosmetic fixes is strong, it’s essential to approach treatments like mesotherapy with caution. Consulting with qualified medical professionals and understanding the risks involved can help ensure safety and well-being.
