Foods: Which Ones Should You Wash Off And Which Not

Foods can contain dirt and bacteria, needed to be washed off before consuming them. However, not all foods need to be washed.

Let us take some minutes to read a list of foods if you should wash them or not. Probably you do the exact thing you should do, but some people do not.

1. EGGS

You should wash eggs just before cooking. Unwashed eggs last longer stored at room temperature.

Tip: Marinate them to last longer. You can store them in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.

2. RAW MEAT

You probably did not know this, but you should not wash raw meat. Stores and farms follow strict rules regarding the production process of raw meat. The bacteria will die during the cooking, anyway.

Tip: Wash the knives and cutting boards after cooking meat.

3. ONIONS

Do not wash onions because they are covered with a peel. If they have dirt on them, wash them quickly in tap water without soap.

Tip: Don’t wash garlic, either.

4. MUSHROOMS

This might be unbelievable, but you should not wash mushrooms before cooking. Cook them right away. Remove any dirt with a dry towel.

Tip: Cut off the chunks of dirt.

5. RICE

Do not wash rice because its natural starch will be washed off. The scientists have a method to remove its dirt: put the rice into boiling water, and 5 minutes later, remove the boiled water and add a fresh one.

Tip: You can sometimes wash the rice if the recipe says so.

6. GREENS

Greens should be washed right before cooking. However, there are steps you should follow. Wash off the dirt with cold tap water. Then, soak them in water until the sand settles on the bottom.

Tip: Add vinegar or soda while soaking them in water to clean them better.

7. NUTS

Nuts and dried fruits should be washed, especially if they have shells. They are sprinkled with special chemicals to prevent mold from appearing.

Tip: You might soak the nuts overnight.

8. MUSSELS

It does not matter if they are fresh, frozen, or in a vacuum package: Wash mussels because they have shell pieces inside.

Tip: Eat only mussels opened after 5-7 minutes of heat treatment.

9. CANNED VEGETABLES

Wash canned vegetables before cooking because they contain too much starch and salt, and you will get rid of the metal taste.

Tip: You might use the liquid inside the can for other things.

10. SODA CANS

Soda cans contain a lot of dirt and dust because they are stored without additional packaging. Clean the soda can before opening it.

Tip: If you buy a soda in a store or a café, you might ask for a glass to pour the drink into.
