A 29-year-old man from the Netherlands was left in critical condition after inserting 15 hard-boiled eggs into his rectum while under the influence of GHB, a potent sedative also known as a date-rape drug.
According to the Dutch Magazine for Healthcare, the man and his partner had been boiling the eggs together when he decided to peel them and insert them rectally. Later that night, he developed severe abdominal pain and sought emergency care.
At the hospital, doctors observed that he was experiencing tachycardia (a heart rate of 120 beats per minute) and tachypnea (29 rapid breaths per minute).
Physical examination revealed widespread abdominal guarding, suggesting a serious internal problem. A CT scan confirmed their fears: there was a perforation in the pelvic colon, along with a significant amount of air and fluid in the abdominal cavity — clear signs of abdominal sepsis.
Surgeons quickly performed an emergency laparotomy, making a large incision in the abdominal wall to remove the eggs and irrigate the cavity. They then repaired the rupture in the intestinal wall.
After surgery, the man was closely monitored in intensive care and was discharged several days later in stable condition.
Doctors highlighted the case as a stark reminder of how substance-fueled risky behaviors can lead to severe, even life-threatening, medical emergencies.
