Ioannis Vasilopoulos, the visionary artist behind some of rock music’s most iconic album covers, has passed away at the age of 66.
A legend has passed
He was celebrated for his work with legendary bands such as Bon Jovi and Deep Purple. Vasilopoulos left a lasting mark on the music industry through his distinctive visual style. His death was announced by his family on April 7, accompanied by a heartfelt obituary.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Ioannis — our beloved artist, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend — who has departed for the great beyond,” the statement read.
“We find peace in knowing he is reunited with his parents and other loved ones. We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and admiration for Ioannis and his work.”
The tribute continued, reflecting on the many creative projects he had planned: “There were so many ideas he was eager to bring to life. As a family, we now carry the torch and will honor his legacy by continuing his artistic journey. His vibrant spirit and passion remain alive in the artwork he leaves behind.”
“His infectious smile and childlike wonder live on in every piece. Ioannis will forever be remembered as one of the greatest artists in rock history.”
A memorial will be held
A memorial service is being held today, April 11, at a Greek Orthodox Church. His family and friends will gather to celebrate his life.
Vasilopoulos is survived by his wife Lisa, daughter Maria, son-in-law Conor, grandchildren Henry and Jack, his brother George, and other close relatives.
Over the course of his career, he designed more than 350 album covers. This for major acts like Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Skid Row, Blue Öyster Cult, and Starship. He also collaborated with top music labels including Sony Music, Universal Music, Virgin Records, and Starz.
He will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, Ioannis.
