Pam’s story began in May 1972, just two weeks before she was to graduate high school. Liberman, cruising in his yellow Corvette, spotted the young beauty hitchhiking, and fate intervened. Pam, who had planned to study business at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, found herself drawn to Jim and soon joined him on the road.

“I ditched the college that accepted me, and it drove my mother nuts,she later recalled.

Touring together, Jim and Pam became a beloved duo in drag racing. Jim’s showmanship paired with Pam’s presence made them a dynamic team. Jim initially invited Pam to stage his funny car at the starting line, knowing she’d capture the audience’s attention — and she did.

“Well, sex sells,Pam admitted to Competition Plus.Back in the ’70s, Jungle and I decided to give it a shot, and it certainly didn’t hurt his reputation. People took more photos of his car when I was beside it than of any other.”

Pam’s presence on the track was striking; she was known for her natural beauty, often braless, wearing tank tops or skimpy halters, and incredibly short jean shorts.

I’m kind of amazed by all the notoriety,she said in 1974.

Pam was more than a pretty face. She staged the car, checked for fluid leaks, filled the block with water and oil, packed parachutes after each race, and assisted Jim with positioning after burnouts.

“We put on a good show,Pam explained.It was never just about me; it was about us and what we were doing together out there.”

Pam’s flair was astroke of geniusin racing, and her enthusiasm only enhanced Jim’s reputation and the sport’s overall image.

In the niche world of drag racing, Jim and Pam were standouts. Though Jim won several national championships, he was most renowned for his showmanship, warm demeanor, and electrifying partner.

“Our relationship was like a flash in the pan, a lightning bolt. It just worked,Pam told Fox Sports.

But everything changed on September 9, 1977. Just days before his 32nd birthday, Jim was racing his Corvette at 250 mph when he collided with a bus.

The tragic crash killed him instantly, and responders took a heartbreaking 45 minutes to extract his body.My mom called me to tell me; she didn’t want me to hear it on the news,Pam shared with CompetitionPlusTV.

The accident sent shockwaves through the motorsports community. In its wake, Pam decided to step back from drag racing, promising herself she wouldn’t work with another driver again.

Pam devoted herself to preserving Jim’s memory, often participating in events honoring him.All that showmanship was his real personality. He had that flair even at home. You could always feel his presence,Pam recalled.

Romantically, Pam moved on. True to her racing roots, she later married Funny Car owner Fred Frey and, after their divorce, wed Bill Hodgson, who tunes George Reidnauer’s Excalibur Corvette Nostalgia Funny Car.
