In what some are calling a modern-day miracle, a Kentucky mother believes her unborn baby was touched by the “hand of God” — and has an ultrasound image she says proves it.
In April 2022, Amanda Foster, now 33, posted an ultrasound photo on Facebook, revealing that her unborn son Jay had “healthy kidneys, no cysts and perfect blood flow to and from.”
She also noted that her son was “Potter syndrome free,” a condition the Cleveland Clinic describes as a “rare condition that affects the growth and function of a baby’s kidneys and other internal organs,” which can be life-threatening and shorten an infant’s life expectancy.
‘More common in males’
Foster’s fear of Potter syndrome began when she was 17, after tragically losing her first son at just 20 weeks of pregnancy.
“My thought at that time was, ‘Well, if God is going to take my son, He will take me too!” Foster shared in a Facebook post, recalling the grief over losing her first son, Xavier. “It didn’t work out that way, and I developed a deep resentment and anger toward God. If that wasn’t enough, I was later told it was very unlikely I would ever have a healthy baby boy since Potter syndrome is more common in males.”
Foster and her husband Kyle went on to have two healthy daughters, and in August 2022, welcomed their first son, Jay.
‘Pray over Kyler’
Now, Foster is pregnant again with another boy, whom they have named Kyler. But this time, early scans detected a serious heart defect — an aortic septum abnormality that could be life-threatening.
Leading up to her late-May high-risk scan, Foster wrote in a Facebook post that “each time before ultrasounds I’ve dropped to my knees right in the doctor’s office to pray over Kyler.”
“In my prayers for him I’ve asked the lord repeatedly to please keep his hand on my baby and whatever his plan may be to help me trust fully in it at ease.”
‘Hand’ on her baby
Foster brought her daughter Bailey along to her appointment, hoping she might help ease the anxiety she’d felt throughout the pregnancy. But what Bailey noticed on the screen quickly shifted those nerves into amazement.
“I had an ultrasound yesterday, my youngest daughter Bailey was the first to notice it and asked me whose hand that was,” she wrote in a Facebook post that has since gone viral. Alongside a black-and-white ultrasound image, she described what appears to be a giant hand cradling Kyler’s head. “In one of his pictures it has the appearance of a hand holding his head,” she added.
The sight, Foster said, moved her to “tears” over “all [God] has and continues to do for me. And I couldn’t ever fathom a thought of living without [God] in my life!”
‘Chunky boy’
On June 20, Foster shared another update on social media, announcing that at 36 weeks, her baby was weighing over seven pounds.
She wrote, “Our chunky boy is going to be the biggest baby I’ve officially ever had. Today they monitored his practice breathing. All together his measurements are a week and a half ahead. His heart rate was 132 today. His sweet little face, I cannot wait to have him in my arms!”
For Amanda Foster, the ultrasound is far more than a medical scan. It stands as a powerful reminder that even after experiencing loss, heartbreak, and doubt, healing is possible.
