Shared on Reddit, the group photo quickly went viral, but not for the usual reasons. What appears to be a simple snapshot of friends on a scenic hike has been labeled one of the creepiest images online, as social media users react with horror to a hidden figure lurking in plain sight.
“A friend of mine sent me this picture from his group of friends in Chile,” the original poster shared. “At first, I didn’t notice anything unusual. But once you see it, you can’t unsee it.”
As viewers examined the photo more closely, a disturbing figure emerged—an extra face that wasn’t part of the group but appeared to be lurking among the friends, hiding in plain sight.
Those with keen eyesight quickly spotted the unsettling detail in the bottom left corner of the photo. Between two of the women, slightly obscured, is another face staring straight at the camera. Unlike the others, this figure isn’t smiling, nor does it appear to be standing with the group. Instead, they seem squeezed between two hikers, their faces half-hidden in the shadows, giving them a ghostly, chilling appearance.
The sight is nothing short of terrifying. “I’m not exaggerating when I say that when I finally saw it, I got goosebumps and felt real fear,” one commenter shared. “Wtf. I believe in ghosts again now.”
The photo quickly went viral as users shared their shocked reactions. Comments ranged from confused to outright terrified. “I kept staring at the red thing in the corner,” one person admitted. “I thought it was just someone cut off from the pic… then BOOM, I saw it. Hiding under my blanket now.”
Many others described similar experiences of being completely spooked by the hidden figure. The fear stemmed not only from seeing the face but from a gut feeling that something was just “off” about the entire image. Even those typically unfazed by such photos were rattled.
Predictably, as with any eerie image, some tried to explain away the hidden face as a trick of lighting or shadows. One user proposed, “It’s just someone else in the group, with their face obscured by shadows and made to look creepy due to that intense blue filter.”
This rational take suggests the ghostly face could simply be a person partially hidden by the shadows or angle of the shot. Yet, even this explanation couldn’t shake the feeling of unease.
