Red Bumps on Your Arms: Why You Get Them

Discover the cause behind those red bumps on your arm. Understand why they appear and find solutions to soothe and prevent them.

Red bumps that resemble permanent goosebumps can appear on your skin, causing itchiness and uncertainty. This rash, often called ‘chicken skin,’ consists of numerous tiny red bumps clustered together.

Don’t worry if you’ve seen red bumps on your arms before and didn’t know what they were. It’s a common condition called keratosis pilaris.

Keratosis Pilaris primarily impacts the upper arms and can also appear on the thighs.

Rare types of keratosis can impact eyebrows, face, and occasionally the scalp. In rare instances, the rash may extend across your whole body, indicating a genetic skin disorder inherited from your parents.

As explained by experts, this condition occurs when hair follicles become clogged with excess keratin.

Keratin typically resides in the skin’s tough outer layer, leading to thickening of the surface. When excess keratin clogs hair follicles, it leads to rough, bumpy skin and enlarged pores, resulting in a red and patchy appearance.

Keratosis Pilaris is non-contagious and lacks a cure.

However, it often improves with age, and some individuals may be fortunate enough to be free of Keratosis Pilaris by age 25.

While there is no definitive cure, you can take steps to alleviate the condition. Opt for soap-free cleansers to prevent drying out your skin cells, and make sure to moisturize regularly.
