Mary Ann Bevan, born in 1874 in London, began her adult life as a nurse—a respected profession that she gave up when she married and started a family. But in 1914, tragedy struck. Her husband passed away suddenly, leaving her a widow with four young children to support.
Around the same time, Bevan began showing signs of acromegaly, a rare and disfiguring condition caused by excessive growth hormone production.
Facing poverty and desperation, Bevan made a painful choice. In 1920, she entered a contest in which the “winner” would receive the title of “Ugliest Woman in the World.” She won—securing employment with a circus sideshow at Coney Island’s Dreamland in New York. While the job exposed her to global mockery, it came with a steady income. With it, she ensured her children had food, shelter, and access to education.
