In a significant health alert, Henkel has voluntarily recalled 1,068 units of its Tec Italy Shampoo for dry and damaged hair. This action follows the detection of Klebsiella oxytoca, a bacterium that poses serious health risks when it enters the bloodstream. Consumers are urged to discontinue use immediately to prevent potential infections.

The contaminated shampoo was distributed to salons through C&R Beauty, Caesar’s Professional Products Inc., and Vero Beauty Distributors. While Tec Italy products are commonly available at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Amazon, the affected units were sold directly to salons. The exact number of salons and consumers impacted remains unclear. The specific batch under recall carries the lot code 1G27542266 with an expiration date of May 27, 2027.

Klebsiella oxytoca is typically harmless within the intestinal tract but becomes dangerous if it enters other parts of the body. Infections can lead to severe conditions such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sepsis. Symptoms may include fever, chills, shortness of breath, and abdominal pain. Individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions are particularly at risk, with a mortality rate estimated between 10% and 20% for bloodstream infections.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this recall as Class II, indicating that exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. This recall follows a similar incident in January involving Tec Italy’s Tonico Shampoo, which was recalled due to potential E. coli contamination.

Consumers in possession of the affected Tec Italy Shampoo should cease usage immediately. While no illnesses have been reported to date, vigilance is essential. Consulting healthcare providers for any health concerns is advisable. Proper disposal methods should be followed, although the FDA has not specified particular instructions for this product.
