In 1993, Tomm Tennent was born in South East Australia, surprising his parents with his unique condition. Pre-birth ultrasounds hinted at a medical anomaly, leaving his parents unsure about their decision to keep him.
“We sort of discussed this between us, and we decided what’s meant to be is meant to be and we went through with it,” said his dad, Geoff Tennent.
No tests or examinations could prepare anyone for the extent of Tomm’s condition. His parents were utterly stunned when they laid eyes on him for the first time in the delivery room. Tomm’s mother, Debbie Tennent, couldn’t believe her eyes as he was placed on her chest.
“My heart came up to my throat, but at the same time it was lovely to pick him up and cuddle him,” she said.
He was a medical mystery
Medical experts were baffled by Tomm, a boy born with an abundance of wrinkled skin. Without a clear cause, there was no treatment or cure, leaving them to rely on the hope that he would naturally outgrow it with age.
Due to Tomm’s exceptional uniqueness, researchers dedicated resources to studying his case, determined to unravel the enigma of his condition.
Tomm spent two and a half months in a medical center, posing a unique challenge for scientists. Despite the trying time, the Tennent family found strength in their lovable, unaware baby boy.
During their relentless pursuit of a solution, doctors made an unexpected breakthrough. They uncovered striking resemblances between Tomm’s appearance and the Chinese Shar Pei dog breed, unveiling crucial insights.

His Hyaluronic acid levels, similar to Shar Pei puppies, were 100 times higher than normal. As Shar Peis grow up, their Hyaluronic acid levels decrease, leading to a more typical skin appearance. Doctors remained hopeful that the same would happen for Tomm.
Dr. Andrew Ramsden assured that Tomm’s condition would likely fade away with age, and indeed, he was correct.
Tomm encountered difficulties during his childhood, enduring teasing and exclusion at school due to his unique appearance. However, his resilience and outgoing nature soon won him many friends, leading to his full integration into school life. While he still bore some physical differences, they were less pronounced than at birth.
Back in 2003, when asked about his friends’ perception of him, Tomm responded with: “Not really, because they are my friends, and they don’t really care how I look like.
During his interview with 60 Minutes, Tomm expressed that when he gazed into the mirror, he saw a compassionate and caring individual, and added: “Sometimes they say I look cool, sometimes they say I look really cool, and sometimes they don’t say anything.”
Naturally, his parents have always been immensely proud of their exceptional son. “He’s a good boy. All he has achieved. He is doing good at school, he is doing good at everything,” his dad said.
Upon his birth, Tom Tennent’s parents made a profound decision: they vowed to never conceal him, recognizing that true beauty transcends superficiality.

It has been 28 years since Tomm’s birth, astounding doctors. Following the documentaries by 60 Minutes, public interest peaked in the boy with a contagious smile and excess skin. Unfortunately, traditional media has provided limited updates since then.
Despite the limited information on social media, Tomm’s current life remains elusive. His Facebook suggests a blissful marriage to Hannah in Frankston, Victoria, Australia.
”Life’s simple. You make choices, and you don’t look back,” Tomm posted on his Facebook profile.
