Let’s Educate Ourselves: What Is Abrosexuality?

Sexuality is a deeply personal and complex part of identity. While some individuals experience consistent patterns of attraction, others may notice their attractions shift over time. This fluid experience is known as abrosexuality, a valid and recognized orientation within the broader LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

Abrosexuality describes people whose sexual attraction changes over time. These shifts can occur over days, months, or years and may involve changes in the gender(s) they are attracted to or the intensity of attraction they feel. At one point, someone may feel drawn to a specific gender, and at another time, they might not feel any attraction at all.

This orientation emphasizes that sexuality is not always fixed and can evolve, something many individuals relate to but may not have had language for until discovering this term.

Unlike bisexual or pansexual individuals, who may experience attraction to multiple genders consistently, abrosexual individuals experience fluidity in how their orientation presents. They may identify with different orientations at different times, depending on how their feelings shift.

It’s important not to confuse this with uncertainty or confusion. For abrosexual people, this fluctuation is part of their natural experience.

Due to the dynamic nature of their orientation, some abrosexual individuals may face challenges in romantic relationships, especially when partners are unfamiliar with this identity. However, many maintain healthy, fulfilling partnerships through open dialogue and mutual respect. Awareness and understanding from partners can make a significant difference.

Recognizing abrosexuality helps create a more inclusive environment for those who may have felt misunderstood or overlooked. It’s essential to provide support without judgment and to respect each person’s experience as valid.

By understanding and acknowledging the fluid nature of attraction, we move closer to a world where everyone’s identity is respected, regardless of how their sexuality evolves.
