Apple’s Find My Device app is a handy tool for tracking lost or stolen devices, as most of us have misplaced our phone, laptop, or tablet at some point.

However, one woman was recently left stunned when she used it to locate her AirPods. She took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a screenshot showing their position on a map—inside the Rikers Island complex, the largest jail facility in New York City.
Situated in the Bronx, Rikers Island consists of 10 jails that hold local offenders awaiting trial or transfer, or serving sentences of one year or less, accommodating up to 15,000 detainees. One of those detainees seems to be in possession of X user Josyln’s AirPods, as she captioned: “Why are my [AirPods] in jail at Rikers?”
Rikers Island is a 413-acre site and home to one of the world’s largest correctional and mental institutions. Known for its violent reputation, it has had numerous reports of assaults by inmates on uniformed officers and was ranked as one of the 10 worst correctional facilities in the US in 2013.
