NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) has unveiled a captivating video that presents Earth in a way you might not have experienced before.
The visualization repeats this seven-day period multiple times.
Scientists utilized data from NASA’s Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5), to create the simulation’s volume-rendered clouds. This specific simulation run, known as the 7km GEOS-5 Nature Run (7km-G5NR), was performed on a supercomputer. The brief visualization generated petabytes of data and relied on nearly a terabyte of brickmap files.
According to the SVS website, the purpose of videos like this is to offer the public a clearer view of our planet and our place within it, as well as to provide insight into NASA’s mission: “The SVS works closely with scientists in the creation of visualizations, animations, and images in order to promote a greater understanding of Earth and space science research activities at Goddard Space Flight Center and within the NASA research community.”
Based on this video, it seems they’ve succeeded in their mission.
