To avoid extra baggage fees, Gel Rodriguez from Davao, Philippines donned multiple layers of clothing, sparing her the added cost.

Upon reaching the check-in counter, the airline staff informed the passenger that her carry-on luggage exceeded the 7-kilogram weight limit, resulting in an additional fee.

She wrote on Facebook: “When the airline staff at the check-in counter said “Only seven kilos are allowed in hand luggage”. Me: “No problem”.”

In a bid to lower her luggage weight from 9kg to 6.5kg, she resorted to wearing multiple pairs of pants, along with seven shirts and jackets, that were originally packed in her bag.

She added in her picture: “*From 9kg to 6.5kg baggage #ExcessBaggageChallengeAccepted.”

The Facebook post by Gel garnered viral attention, amassing over 49,000 likes and numerous comments.

“This is brilliant. Why didn’t I think of this hahaha,” wrote someone.

“I wish I did this, I ended up throwing some of my things in the trash bin. What a pity,” added another.

“This woman is a genius, going to do the same the next time I exceed my baggage limit at the airport, hahahah so good,” said one.

“Lol, I don’t care if she looks funny but this is brilliant and everybody should do the same,” said someone else.

Similarly, other individuals confessed to resorting to the same tactic when confronted with comparable circumstances at the airport.

Rodriguez told VICE in an interview that she was determined to avoid paying the additional fees at any expense: “I didn’t want to pay the fee for the excess baggage because it was only 2 kilograms (4.4 lbs).”

Gel didn’t expect her post to gain viral attention and expressed regret for not posing better. However, after seeing positive feedback and comments from people who wanted to try the same trick, she cautioned them against it.
